![]() 3D Text Effects in Adobe After Effects So I just got hold of my brand new MAC and wanted to take it for a spin to see what I could do with it. Loaded on my new AVID software as well as the new FCP and downloaded a trial version of AE CS4… but what to make. Well I saw The Wolfman at the cinemas on Valentines Day and although I wasn’t overly impressed I did see a couple of movie trailers that inspired me to do some motion graphics. So I’ve kind of combined two text treatments from 2 trailers and come up with this one. Check it out below… Not yet rated with 1512 hits Added on: Feb 20, 2010 |

![]() Motion Graphics With Little Assets I recently edited a TV special on the Australian National Junior Motocross Competition. In the program they interviewed the current world champion in the 85cc class. While were promised a series of photos showing him with his winning bike and trophy… they never arrived. So at the eleventh hour I had to quickly make a graphic to end the segment with him. With only about 45 minutes to make something from scratch this is what i came up with… Not yet rated with 2458 hits Added on: Nov 16, 2009 |

In preparation for a web series that Pro Juice have in pre-production, i've been playing around with some effects that are to appear in a number of the episodes. The first effect is replicating the look of a large screen plasma TV. One of the characters appears on a screen mounted on a wall and then interacts with the characters in the room. It looks like we will achieve the effect in post, so in this tutorial i take you through some of the steps involved in creating this dot-matrix type pattern which is in effect a working style guide for some effects that will appear in the web series - The Science of Night. The ethos of Pro Juice is all about making stuff yourself. It's about creating original music, video and multimedia however you think it should be done and at the lowest cost. It's also about creating a point of difference between your work and somebody elses. In this tutorial, Nick takes us through the steps of creating a 'Twitch' like effect with the effects freely available inside After Effects. He takes the opening shot of Baz Harvey's 'See For' music video and builds the effect from the ground up. You might want to watch the opening 30 seconds of Baz's clip at the Pro Juice site to get an idea of what he's going to make. This way, the effect looks like an original piece of work. Tracking Video into Billboards In this tutorial, Nick shows us how to use the 'Corner Pin' tool in After Effects to sit a piece of video in a billboard. He also demonstrates how to use motion tracking and masking techniques to successfully sit the new piece of footage on a moving billboard and behind tree branches. It's a versatile technique that can be applied to a range of uses including: replacing letters on number plates, putting signs on windows and replacing existing video footage on screens with other footage. Definition: Bleach bypass, also known as skip bleach or silver retention, is an optical effect that entails either the partial or complete skipping of the bleaching function during the processing of a colour film. By doing this, the silver is retained in the emulsion along with the colour dyes. Nick shows us two ways of making a bleach bypass. The first way can be done in AE or Final Cut Pro and involves using two layers. The second is a way he learnt from Creative Cow and can only be done in AE… well you can’t seem to do it in Final Cut anyway. Not yet rated with 1073 hits Added on: Aug 12, 2009 |

![]() Make a Character Unrecognisable Nick takes us through 3 different ways to render a character unidentifiable in an interview situation. In the first instance, he uses an image mask in Final Cut Pro to colour correct the image and applies a pitch shift to change the voice. In the second instance he uses a blur filter and an 8-point garbage matte to blur out the characters voice. He then shows you how to use the 'paste attributes' setting in Final Cut Pro to apply an audio effect created on a previous clip to this new clip. Finally, he uses After Effects to motion track a number of black bars across the distinguishing features of his witness under protection. Not yet rated with 408 hits Added on: Aug 12, 2009 |

To make the heat haze effect was basically a 3 step process. Firstly I created a layer of fractal noise that evolved over time using an expression. I then used this layer as a displacement map for my main piece of footage. This essentially created the wavering, blurry look of a heat haze. The second step was creating the watery reflections you often see in the forground. For this i used a range of masks, scaling and blend modes, along with a bezier warp. The final step was colour correcting to make the warm reds and oranges associated with shooting in hot conditions. Not yet rated with 1239 hits Added on: Aug 11, 2009 |
